Shrine Hospital Twin Cities Serving Children Since 1923

Shriners Hospitals for Children exist for one purpose:
To provide care for the children with orthopedic disabilities and burns. We help children build better lives.

The Twin Cities Shriners Hospital has been providing care for children throughout the upper Midwest since 1923. Today, the Twin Cities hospital, along with the rest o the Shriners Hospitals System, continues to provide the finest orthopedic medical care available, all at no charge.

All services at the 18 orthopedic, three burn, and one combined orthopedic and burn Shriners Hospitals for Children in North America are paid for by the Shrine Philanthropy. Shriners Hospitals do not accept payment for their care from federal or state funds, patients' families or third party payers such as insurance companies.

The Shrine supported various charities almost from its inception. In 1920, however, the organization voted to adopt its own official philanthropy, dedicated to providing free orthopedic medical care to children in need, and the first Shriners Hospital for Children was built in Shreveport, La., in 1922. The Shrine's philanthropy eventually expanded to 22 "Centers of Excellence," including its three Shriners Burns Institutes. There is never a charge to the patient, parent or any third party for any service or medical treatment received at the hospitals, and no state, local or federal funding of any kind is sought or accepted by Shriners Hospitals.

Operating funds are supplied by the Shriners Hospitals for Children Endowment Fund, which supported by the gifts and bequests of Shriners, their families and the general public. Additional revenues come from Shrine fund-raising events and from an annual hospital assessment paid by each Shriner.

You Know You Make a Difference When…

GALVESTON, TX

Young Reid Kenagy recently celebrated his 7th birthday and something amazing happened! At his request, in lieu of presents, celebrants brought cash and check donations for the Shriners Hospital in Galveston. While we hear of those stories everyday, the amazing thing is it blossomed into over $1500 and the donations are still coming in.

At May’s Board of Governor’s meeting, young Mr. Kenagy presented the checks received so far to Tub Room staff members, Maria Andrade-Pulido and Cindy Lu Salinas. Some excerpts from a thank you letter from Reid’s parents:

“When I think of Shriners I think of the worst. I didn’t understand why we needed to go. The Dr. came back in and said there was nothing he could do and that if his son was in that condition Shriners is the only hospital in the world he would go to.”

“I hope someone reads this and passes it to every department so they will be able to understand our heartfelt appreciation for everyone involved. From the wonderful greeter’s at the front with stickers to the doctors there is a common goal. That goal is to preserve the spirit and health of the children that come through these doors.”

“The hospital is so excited about this particular donation, because it is an indication of the difference we make in the lives of our kids,” says John Swartwout, Administrator
